To a stirred solution of (2R,3S,5R)-5-[[tert-butyl(diphenyl)silyl]oxymethyl]tetrahydrofuran-2,3,4-triol (compound 25a, 33 g, 85 mmol) in acetone (250 mL) was added 2,2-dimethoxypropane (13.2 g, 127 mmol) and p-toluene sulfonic acid (1 g, 5.8 mmol). After being stirred at 60° C. for 2 hours, the resulting solution was adjusted to pH 7.0 by addition of saturated NaHCO3 solution and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluting with 1:11 EtOAc in petroleum ether) to afford 20 g of (3aS,5R,6aS)-5-[[tert-butyl(diphenyl)silyl]oxymethyl]-2,2-dimethyl-3a,5,6,6a-tetrahydrofuro[2,3-d][1,3]dioxol-6-ol (compound 25b).
