A solution of 10.9 g (65.4 mmol) of (1-hydroxymethyl)adamantane and 10.6 g (65.4 mmol) of carbonyldiimidazole in 60 ml of THF were stirred at 50° C. for 1.5 h. 9.7 g (32.7 mmol) of tert-butyl (S)-2-amino-3-tert-butoxycarbonylaminopropionate hydrochloride in 25 ml of THF and 5.6 ml (32.7 mmol) of diisopropylethylamine were added, and the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 4 h and allowed to stand at room temperature overnight. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel using heptane/ethyl acetate (7/3). 8.7 g (59%) of the title compound were obtained as a colorless oil.
