Procedure

1.7 g (3.9 mmol) of methyl 4-[7-(1-adamantyl)-6-allyl-2-naphthyl]benzoate and 40 ml of THF were introduced into a round-bottomed flask under a stream of nitrogen. A solution of 23.5 ml (11.7 mmol) of 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (0.5M in THF) was added dropwise at 0° C. and the reaction mixture was stirred for one hour at room temperature. 12 ml (12 mmol) of a sodium hydroxide solution (1 M) and 10 ml of a 30% hydrogen peroxide solution were then added successively and at 0° C. and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for one hour. The reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with ethyl ether and the organic phase was separated by settling, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated.
