Procedure
Under a nitrogen atmosphere, oxalyl chloride (4.6 g, 0.037 mole) was added dropwise (slowly) to a stirred and chilled (10°-15°° C.) solution of 2-(3-chlorophenyl)-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-3-acetic acid (10.0 g, 0.035 mole) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (100 ml). The reaction mixture was heated at 55°-60° C. for 5 hours, cooled to room temperature, and added dropwise to a stirred and chilled (10°-15° C.) solution of aniline (3.5 g, 0.038 mole) and triethylamine (7.6 g, 0.076 mole) in anhydrous dimethylformamide (75 ml). The reactionwas stirred dat room temperature overnight, poured into water (500 ml), allowed to precipitate, and diltered. The filter cake was twice suspended in position bicarbonate solution (250 ml) and filtered. The filter cake was washed with water, air dried, and recrystallized from ethanol, giving 4.74 g (37%) of off-white needles, mp 211°-212° C.
