A solution of 480 mg of sodium in 17.5 ml of methanol is treated with 1.18 g of 3-methoxy-2-(5-hexenyl)acrolein and 1.62 g of 4-amidinobenzamide hydrochloride and the mixture is stirred at 50° C. overnight under nitrogen. After cooling the suspension is treated with 5.5 ml of 3N hydrochloric acid, filtered and the residue is washed with water and dried. The crude p-[5-(5-hexenyl)-2-pyrimidinyl]benzamide obtained is further processed without additional purification.
