Procedure

A solution of 2-(3-chlorophenyl)-3H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine-3-acetic acid (6.7 g, 0.00233 mole), 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (4.0 g, 0.025 mole), and anhydrous tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) was stirred at room temperature with a stream of nitrogen bubbling through for 21/2 hours. The nitrogen flow was stopped and a solution of N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (2.3 g, 0.0257 mole) in dry tetrahydrofuran (50 ml) was stirred at room temperature under nitrogen for 2 hours. The reaction was concentrated in vacuo and partitioned between methylene chloride (75 ml) and water (75 ml). The layers were separated and the aqueous portion washed with methylene chloride (25 ml). The combined organic portions were washed with potassium bicarbonate solution (2×50 ml), water (25 ml), dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo. The solid residue, 5.7 g (68%) was recrystallized from isopropyl alcohol-isopropyl ether to give 4.0 g of off-white granular solid, mp b 124°-125° C.
