Procedure
A mixture of 5-chloro-2-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (35 g, 220 mmol), bromo-acetic acid methyl ester (43 g, 282 mmol), K2CO3 (60 g, 434 mmol) and in DMF (300 mL) was heated at 140° C. for 10 min. Then the mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was separated, washed with water 4 times, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, concentrated to give crude product as yellow solid (50 g).
