Procedure

To a stirred solution of N-(2-pyrimidinyl)piperazine dihydrochloride (4.25 g, 0.0179 mol) and triethylamine (6.06 g, 0.06 mol) in DMF was added 3-bromopropyl pivalate (4.0 g, 0.0179 mol) and the solution was stirred overnight at room temperature. The solvent was evaporated and the residue dissolved in CH2Cl2. The CH2Cl2 extract was washed with water, dried (anhydrous Na2SO4) and evaporated to afford 9.0 g of crude title compound. Purification by HPLC and conversion to the dihydrochloride with ethereal HCl yielded the product, mp. 178°-180° C.
