9-BBN (277 mL, 139 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-(trifluoromethyl)-3-(4-vinylphenoxyl)benzene (24.4 g, 92 mmol) in THF (200 mL) at 0° C., and the resulting reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. To the mixture was added 3M NaOH solution (140 mL) and 30% hydrogen peroxide (123 mL) slowly at 0° C., and the reaction mixture was stirred at 50° C. for 2 h. Purification via column chromatography then afforded the title compound as a colorless oil (17 g, 63.8% yield). LCMS: rt=1.79 min, [M-OH]+=265
