To a solution of 5-hydroxy-2-methylbenzoic acid (1.52 g) in DMF (25 mL) were added benzyl bromide (3.40 g) and potassium carbonate (4.14 g), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr. Water was added to the reaction mixture, and the precipitated crystals were collected by filtration, and dried to give the title compound (2.80 g) as a white solid. This compound was used for the next step without further purification.
