Procedure

6-(5-Bromo-pyridin-3-yl)-3,4-dihydro-2H-[1,8]naphthyridine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (260 mg, 0.67 mmol) is dissolved in 3.0 mL of DCM and trifluoroacetic acid (1.0 mL, 12 mmol) is added. The mixture is stirred for 21 hrs. Then saturated aqueous NaHCO3 is used to adjust the pH to about 8 and EtOAc (25 mL) along with 15 mL of water are added. The mixture is stirred for 10 min and the aqueous layer is separated and extracted with EtOAc (2×15 ml). The organic layers are combined and concentrated to give 6-(5-bromo-pyridin-3-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-[1,8]naphthyridine which is used in the next step without puification.
