Procedure

54 mg [7-(3,4-Dimethoxy-phenyl)-[1,6]-naphthyridine-5-yloxy]-acetic acid hydrazide (I.34) was placed in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) and N,N-dimethyl formamide (1 mL) at ambient temperature before 37 mg carbonyl diimidazole and 43 μl triethylamine were added. The reaction mixture was heated to 70° C. where it was maintained for 16 h. After this time additional carbonyl diimidazole and triethylamine were added and the reaction was maintained at 70° C. for a further 5 h. After this time additional carbonyl diimidazole and triethylamine were added and the reaction was maintained at 70° C. for a further 19 h. The solvent was then removed under reduced pressure and the crude product that remained was partitioned between dichloromethane and water. The dichloromethane layer was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with additional dichloromethane (×2). The combined organic fractions were washed with water, saturated sodium chloride solution and then dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and the solvent was removed from the filtrate under reduced pressure. Purification twice by chromatography on silica gel (methanol/ethyl acetate: 0%-5% and then methanol/ethyl acetate: 0%-2%) followed by trituration with dichloromethane provided the title compound.
