To a solution of (2S)-2-((3S)-3-{[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]amino}-2-oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)propanoic acid (3.1 g) in DCM (30 ml) were added 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (4.6 g), HOBT (3.2 g) and triethylamine (2.5 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 min. Piperidine (2.9 ml) was added and the resultant mixture stirred at room temperature for 72 h. The mixture was washed with potassium carbonate (2M), dried (over magnesium sulphate) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified using Biotage™ chromatography (silica, eluting with cyclohexane:ethyl acetate 3:1 and then ethyl acetate) to give the title compound (2.6 g) as a white solid.
