To a solution of ethyl-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyrate (2.08 g, 10 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (20 mL) was added triethylamine (2.1 mL, 15 mmol) and Ms2O (1.92 g, 11 mmol) at 0° C. The resulting reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 min. DMAP (50 mg) was added to the reaction mixture. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction was quenched with saturated NaHCO3. The resulting mixture was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×50 mL). The combined organic phases were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and CH2Cl2 was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (CH2Cl2), giving 2.7 g (94%) of the title compound. 13C NMR (CDCl3): 6169.3, 140.0, 128.9, 128.8, 126.7, 62.3, 52.8, 39.5, 33.9, 31.2, 14.3.
