Procedure
7-[2-{N-(2-tert-Butoxycarbonylphenyl)carbamoylmethoxyimino}-2-(2-formamidothiazol-4-yl)acetamido]-3-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thiomethyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid (syn isomer) (2.0 g.) was added to a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid (7 ml.) and anisole (0.35 ml.) with stirring at about 10° C., followed by stirring for 1.5 hours at 5° to 10° C. and for an additional 15 minutes at room temperature. After concentration of the reaction mixture, to the residue were added methanol (30 ml.) and conc. hydrochloric acid (2.33 ml.). The resulting mixture was stirred for 1.5 hours at room temperature and concentrated and then the residue was shaken with a mixture of an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate and ethyl acetate. The aqueous layer (pH 7 to 8) was separated and thereto was added ethyl acetate and 10% hydrochloric acid with stirring whereby the pH was adjusted to 2 to 3. The resulting precipitates were filtered and redissolved in an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate. To the aqueous solution (150 ml.) was added ethyl acetate (300 ml.) and the mixture was acidified to pH 2 to 3 with 10% hydrochloric acid. The ethyl acetate layer was separated, washed with an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried and then concentrated. The residue was washed with diethyl ether to give the title compound (0.8 g.). mp. 220° to 230° C. (dec.)
