A mixture containing (6-(tert-butoxycarbonylamino)pyridin-3-yl)methyl methanesulfonate (102; 1.21 g, 5.0 mmol), morpholine (48; 1.31 g, 15.0 mmol), K2CO3 (2.10 g, 15.0 mmol) and NaI (0.12 g, 0.75 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was stirred at 80° C. for 4 h. Upon cooling to room temperature, water (30 mL) was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by chromatography (petroleum ether:ethyl acetate=10:1 to 1:1) to afford tert-butyl 5-(morpholinomethyl)pyridin-2-ylcarbamate 107 (1.40 g, 95%).
