To a mixture of 10.0 g (37.9 mmol) of 8,11-dichloro-6,11-dihydro-5H-benzo[5,6]cyclohepta[1,2-b]pyridine and 1.0 ml of Et3N in 200 mL of dry THF at room temperature and under a nitrogen atmosphere was added 33.0 g of piperazine. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 22.5 hours and then refluxed for 5.5 hours. It was then cooled to room temperature, poured into 250 mL of 5% aqueous NaOH, and extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×). The combined organic portions were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified via flash chromatography (2→5% MeOH saturated with ammonia in CH2 Cl2) to yield the title compound as a glass.
