Procedure
2-Chloromethyl-5-(2-cyanophenyl)-1H-benzimidazole (1.31 mole, 0.350 g) was dissolved in 2 ml THF and cooled to 0° C. Dimethylamine (1 ml) was added. The solution was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes. Ethyl acetate was added. The organic phase was washed with water, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated to yield 270 mg of 5-(2-cyanophenyl)-2-dimethylaminomethyl-1H-benzimidazole. (MS)
