Procedure
3-Cyano-7-ethylthioxanthone (5.3 g), sodium azide (1.55 g), and ammonium chloride (1.26 g) in dimethylformamide were heated at 120° C. for 3 hours, cooled, and poured into dilute hydrochloric acid. The solid precipitate was filtered off and recrystallised twice from acetic acid to yield 7-ethyl-3-(5-tetrazolyl)thioxanthone m.p. 247° C. with decomposition.
