2.94 Grams of isatin and 4.00 g of 2-diisopropylaminoethyl chloride hydrochloride were suspended in a mixture of 50 ml of dry toluene and 10 ml of dry N,N-dimethylformamide, and 1.60 g of sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil) was added to the suspension with stirring under ice-cooling. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at room temperature, and then heated at 80° C. for 19 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and water was added to the residue. The mixture was extracted with benzene, and the benzene layer was washed with water, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was recrystallized from hexane to obtain 4.62 g of 1-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl)isatin having a melting point of 60°-61° C.
