(3-Hydroxy-phenyl)-acetic acid methyl ester (5 g, 30.1 mmol), 5-bromo-2-fluorobenzaldehyde (3.6 mL, 30.1 mmol), and potassium carbonate (8.3 g, 60.2 mmol) were combined in 1,4-dioxane (40 mL) and stirred at 120° C. for 16 hours. Once no starting material was seen by analytical LCMS and tlc, the mixture was worked-up with 10% aqueous HCl and EtOAc, and the crude material was purified by silica gel chromatography to give the desired product as a colorless oil (5 g).
