To a solution of 2-(4-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-butoxy)-6-hydroxy-benzoic acid methyl ester (1.5 g, 4.4 mmol) in 20 mL of DMF is added benzyl bromide (0.56 mL, 4.6 mmol) and K2CO3 (1.8 g, 13.0 mmol) and the suspension is stirred at RT for 3 h. The mixture is poured into water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer is dried, filtered, and the solvent is removed under reduced pressure to give an oil that is purified by flash chromatography using a gradient of hexane/EtOAc (5:1 to 1:1) to give the product as a colorless liquid.
