Procedure

The unsaturated ester (2) (2.95 g, 16.2 mmol) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) and stirred at 70° C. with nitromethane (1.9 mL, 35.2 mmol) and tetrabutylammonium fluoride (1.0 M in tetrahydrofuran, 22 mL, 22.0 mmol). After 6 hours, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate (50 mL), and washed with 2N HCl (30 mL) followed by brine (50 mL). The organic phase was collected, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (silica, ethyl acetate:heptane 1:9) to give 1.152 g (29%) of a clear oil.
