To a solution of tert-butyl P,P-dimethylphosphonoacetate (Fluka, 1.43 g, 6.4 mmol) in THF (40 mL) was added NaH (Alderich, 60%, 536 mg, 13.4 mmol) portionwise at rt over 30 min. Methyl 4-formylbenzoate (Alderich, 1.0 g, 6.09 mmol) was then added and the reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 4 hrs. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, and dried over Na2SO4. The mixture was then concentrated to give the crude 4-((E)-2-tert-butoxycarbonyl-vinyl)-benzoic acid methyl ester (1.89 g, 118%).
