Carbomethoxymethylene triphenylphosphorane (0.517 g, 1.55 mmol) was added to a solution of 6-(4-methylthiazol-2-ylamino)-4-(naphthalen-1-yloxy)nicotinaldehyde (0.430 g, 1.19 mmol) in THF (5 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hours and then concentrated, and the residue was purified via MPLC (Biotage), eluting with 1:1 hexane:ethyl acetate to provide (Z)-methyl 3-(6-(4-methylthiazol-2-ylamino)-4-(naphthalen-1-yloxy)pyridin-3-yl)acrylate (0.072 g, 14% yield) and (E)-methyl 3-(6-(4-methylthiazol-2-ylamino)-4-(naphthalen-1-yloxy)pyridin-3-yl)acrylate (0.216 g, 43% yield).
