iso-Butyl chloroformate (0.13 ml, 1 mmol) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 2,3-dimethylmaleimide (0.1 g, 0.8 mmol) and triethylamine (0.13 ml, 0.92 mmol) in dimethylformamide (1.5 ml) at 0-5° C. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stand for 4 h. Methyl alcohol (0.5 ml) was added, diluted with chloroform (5 ml) and washed with water (3×3 ml). The chloroform solution was dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuum to give N-iso-butoxycarbonyl-2,3-dimethylmaleimide (yield 83%).
