To a suspension of NaH (80% disp. in oil, 2.016 g, 67.2 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran (300 ml) was added (±)trans-1-chloro-2-tert-butoxycarbonylaminoindane (15 g, 56 mmol) and 15-crown-5 (50 μl). The mixture was then warmed at 50° C. under nitrogen for 18 h after which it was poured into water (700 ml) and extracted with diethyl ether (3×150 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried (Na2SO4) and solvents were removed in vacuo to afford the title compound as a brown solid (12.67 g).
