A solution of the product of step (b) (8.7 g) in tetrahydrofuran (150 ml) of 2M hydrochloric acid was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The mixture was neutralised with sodium bicarbonate solution and extracted with dichloromethane. Evaporation of the extract and chromatography of the residue on silica gel eluting with 1:1 ether:hexane to remove starting material, then with ether, gave the title product as a pale oil.
