Procedure

A mixture of 375 mg (1.4 mmol) 4-(3-cyano-phenoxy)-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid ethyl ester, 1.4 ml 1M LiOH, and 10 mL of THF was stirred for 18 hours at room temperature. The mixture was concentrated via rotary evaporation to yield yellow oil. The oil was diluted with 1 N HCl (30 mL) precipitating a white solid. The solid was filtered then dried in a drying pistol giving 265 mg of white powder.
