A solution of (E)-4-carbomethoxycinnamic acid (5.09 g, 24.7 mmol) was dissolved in dry THF (25 mL) and treated under an argon atmosphere with oxalyl chloride (3.00 mL, 34.4 mmol) and a drop of dry DMF. After heating at 50° C. for 2 hours, the reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to yield the acid chloride of (E)-carboxymethyl cinnamic acid as a tan solid.
