Formation of compound (c): A mixture of 3,5-dimethyl-4-nitrophenol (b) (2 g, 12 mmol), bromobutane (1.6 mL, 15 mmol), K2CO3 (2.1g, 15mmol) in DMF (6 mL) was stirred at 60° C. for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was poured into 50 mL of H2O and extracted with ether (3×50 mL). The combined ether layer was washed with H2O and subsequently with brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give compound (c), 4-butoxy-2,6-dimethyl-nitrobenzene (2.6 g, 97% yield) as a dark brown oil. 1H-NMR in CDCl3.
