Procedure

In step b, the appropriate α-[(phenyl)ethynyl]-benzenemethanol compound of structure 6 can be oxidized to the corresponding 1-phenyl-3-phenyl-2-propyne-1-one compound of structure 5 by techniques and procedures well known and appreciated by one of ordinary skill in the art. For example, the appropriate α-[(phenyl)ethynyl]-benzenemethanol compound of structure 6 can be oxidized to the corresponding 1-phenyl-3-phenyl-2-propyne-1-one compound of structure 5 by means of either a Swern oxidation (dimethylsulfoxide, oxalyl chloride, and triethylamine), by means of pyridinium dichromate oxidation in a suitable aprotic solvent, such as methylene chloride or by means of barium manganate oxidation in a suitable aprotic solvent, such asmethylene chloride.
