Procedure
The hydrochloride product from part (c) (1.61 g., 4.81 mmole) is partitioned between ethyl acetate and 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (100 ml. each). The organic layer is separated, washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo to give 3-[[(S)-2-amino-1-oxo-3-phenylpropyl]amino]benzoic acid, methyl ester.
