1.62 g (9.75 mmol) of 1-(2,6-dihydroxy-4-methylphenyl)ethanone (35) are dissolved in 30 ml of dimethylformamide, and 4.0 ml (33.7 mmol) of benzyl bromide and 13.8 g (100 mmol) of potassium carbonate are added. The reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. This is followed by addition of water and extraction twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases are washed with saturated sodium chloride solution, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in a rotary evaporator. 1.35 g (40%) of compound 36 are obtained as a colorless crystalline product.
