Procedure
To a stirred solution of Boc-Asp(OBzl), 5.0 g (15.5 mmol) and N-methyl morpholine (15.5 mmol) in 50 mL of dry THF under an Ar atmosphere was added isobutylchloroformate (15.5 mmol) at -15° C. After a few minutes, phenethylamine 2.0 mL (15.5 mmol) in 15 mL of dry THF was added. The mixture was maintained at -15° C. for 15 min. and allowed to warm to room temperature. After stirring for an additional 2 hours, the reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to dryness. The resulting residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate (100 mL) and washed successively with 1M HCl (2×50 mL), water (50 mL), 10% sodium carbonate (2×50 mL), and brine (50 mL). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to yield 5.59 gm (85%) of an amorphous white solid.
