A slurry of methyl 3-formyl-2-hydroxybenzoate (640 mg, 3.56 mmol), K2CO3 (982 mg, 7.12 mmol), and benzyl bromide (0.63 mL, 5.34 mmol) in DMF (3 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours and diluted with EtOAc (100 mL) and water (40 mL). The layers were separated and the organic phase dried over MgSO4. After filtration and concentration in vacuo, the residue was purified via silica gel chromatography, eluting with 0-15% EtOAc in isohexane, to give the title compound as a white solid (598 mg, 62%).
