The 5-phenyl-2-hydroxymethylfuran prepared in Example 327B (345 mg, 1.98 mmol) was dissolved in 5 mL of dry DMF and NaH (50 mg, 1.98 mmol) was added followed by 15-crown-5 (436 mg, 1.98 mmol) and the reaction stirred for 5 minutes at ambient temperature. To the reaction was then added 4-chloromethyl-2-(2-methylphenyl)benzoic acid methyl ester (659 mg, 2.40 mmol) and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was taken up in ethyl acetate and washed with water (3×) and brine (3×), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, evaporated and purified by flash chromatography (15% ethyl acetate-hexanes) to give the desired compound (670 mg, 82%) as an oil.
