Procedure

To a solution of N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-2-methylalanine (1.00 g, 4.92 mmol) in DCM (10 ml) at 0° C. was added cyclopentanol (0.83 ml, 9.84 mmol), EDCI (1.06 g, 5.42 mmol) and finally DMAP (60 mg, 0.49 mmol). The reaction mixture was warmed to RT and stirred for 18 hours. The DCM was removed in vacuo to give a clear oil. The crude residue was dissolved in EtOAc (100 ml) and washed with water, 1 M NaHCO3 and brine. The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The crude extract was purified by column chromatography (10% EtOAc in heptane) to yield the desired product as a clear oil (0.254 g, 20% yield).
