Procedure
A mixture of 2-bromo-10,11-Dihydro-5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepin (4.11 g, 15 mmol, prepared as described in Tetrahedron (1992), 48, 4779) tert-butyl acrylate (2.91 g, 22.5 mmol), palladium acetate (40 mg, 0.2 mmol), tri-o-tolylphosphine (183 mg, 0.6 mmol) and triethylamine (20 ml) in an screw cap ampoule was heated at 100° C. for 20 h. The cooled reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (50 ml), washed with water (3×20 ml), dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo. The residue (3.9 g) was purified by column chromatography on silicagel (600 ml) using a mixture of ethyl acetate and heptane (1:6) as eluent which afforded 1.62 g (34%) of 3-(10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepin-2-yl)acrylic acid tert-butyl ester as a solid.
