PROCEDURE

To a stirred suspension of sodium hydride (60%, 22.0 mg, 5.32 mmol) in anhydrous N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL) was added methyl 3-hydroxy-2-methyl-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoate (1 g, 4.09 mmol) under nitrogen atmosphere at room temperature. After stirring for 30 minutes, 2-bromoethyl methyl ether (1.13 g, 8.18 mmol) and potassium iodide in a catalytic amount were added thereto, and the reaction solution was stirred at 60° C. for 12 hours. 200 mL of ethyl acetate was added to the reaction solution, and the solution was washed twice with a saturate brine. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (n-hexane:ethyl acetate=1:2) to obtain methyl 3-(2-methoxyethoxy)-2-methyl-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzoate as an oil (680 mg).
