To a mixture of 12.8 g magnesium turnings in 100 ml of anhydrous THF (tetrahydrofuran) was added under nitrogen atmosphere 0.3 ml ethyl bromide as starter reagent and the reaction was heated to 50° C. A solution of 67.8 g 3,5-dimethylbenzyl chloride in 450 ml of anhydrous THF was added slowly so that the reaction proceeded without violent reaction but with clear consumption. After the addition of the total amount of chloride, the solution was heated at 50° C. overnight. This resulted in a clear, greenish solution of 3,5-dimethylbenzyl magnesium chloride. This solution was used for the next step.
