1,4-Bis(phenylmethyl)-2-piperazine carboxylic acid (5.0 g, 16 mmol) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (80 mL). 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide hydrochloride (3.1 g, 16 mmol), 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (2.2 g, 16 mmol), N,O-dimethylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (1.9 g, 19 mmol) and triethylamine (2.7 mL, 19 mmol) were added thereto, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 days. To the reaction solution was added ethyl acetate, and the resulting mixture was washed with a 0.5 M aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified with silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=2:1 to 1:1) to obtain the title compound (5.0 g, yield 87%).
