Procedure

To a mixture of 3-iodoindol-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (202) (0.604 g, 2 mmol) and NaH (60%, 0.192 g, 2.4 mmol) in DMF (20 mL) was added p-toluenesulfonylchloride (0.381 g, 2 mmol) at room temperature. After stirring for 1 hour, ethyl acetate (50 mL) was added to the reaction mixture. The mixture was washed with brine (3×30 mL). The organic layer was dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/hexane V:V) to afford 203 (0.68 g, 76%). 1H NMR (CDCl3): 2.35 (s, 3H), 4.05 (s, 3H), 7.23 (d, 2H, J=8.4), 7.33 (t, 1H, J=7.2), 7.41, (m, 2H), 7.83 (d, 2H, J=8.4), 7.98 (d, 1H, J=8.4).
