Step 1 A solution of imidazolidin-2-one (500 mg, 5.81 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was stirred on ice and treated with sodium hydride, 60% oil dispersion (264 mg, 6.60 mmol). The mixture was stirred at rt for 50 min, then was treated with (bromomethyl)benzene (0.691 mL, 5.81 mmol). After 2 h, the mixture was poured into water and extracted three times with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried and concentrated, and the residue was purified by column chromatography (eluting with EtOAc) to provide 1-benzylimidazolidin-2-one as a white solid (160 mg, 16%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, chloroform-d) δ 7.22-7.39 (5 H, m), 4.53 (1 H, br. s.), 4.37 (2 H, s), 3.25-3.46 (4 H, m).
