Sodium hydride (60% oil dispersion) (2.77 g, 69.4 mmol) was added to a solution of 1-naphthol (10.00 g, 69.4 mmol) in THF (200 mL) while cooling in an ice bath. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 30 min and 1,2,3-trifluoro-4-nitrobenzene (12.28 g, 69.4 mmol) was added and the mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 2 hrs, the reaction mixture was poured into a mixture of ice and 10% aqueous HCl and was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate) to give the title compound (14.5 g, 69.4%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, chloroform-d) 6d ppm 8.31-8.45 (m, 1H), 7.82-7.99 (m, 2H), 7.54-7.66 (m, 3H), 7.30 (t, 1H), 7.17-7.26 (m, 1H), 6.61 (d, 1H).
