2,4-Dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde (6.0 g), benzyl bromide (9.7 g) and 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (8.6 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (30 ml) were heated at 100° C. under nitrogen for 5 hours. After cooling to room temperature, 1 N NaOH was added and the mixture washed with ethyl acetate. The water phase was acidified with HCl and the precipitate was filtered.
