Ethyl 2-(2-bromo-4-fluoro-5-nitrophenyl)acetate (1.0 g, 3.27 mmol) and zinc cyanide (0.77 g, 6.54 mmol) were combined in DMF (8 mL), de-gassed under vacuum and backfilled with argon (4×). Palladium tetrakis(triphenylphosphine) (380 mg, 0.32 mmol) was added and the reaction was heated at 160° C. under microwave for 30 min. The solution was diluted with EtOAc and then the solid was filtered. The filtrate was washed with brine (3×) and dried (Na2SO4), concentrated in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain ethyl 2-(2-cyano-4-fluoro-5-nitrophenyl)acetate (0.3 g, 37% yield).
