Procedure
A mixture of 2-(3-methoxycarbonyl-phenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.16 g, 1 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (40 mL), 2M lithium hydroxide in water (20 mL) was stirred for 48 h at 25° C. The mixture was neutralized with a 3 N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, diluted with ethyl acetate (100 mL), washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and then concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-(3-carbonyl-phenyl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.1 g, 98%) as a white solid: LC/MS m/e calcd for C21H23NO4 (M+H)+: 354.42, observed: 354.0.
