Procedure
To a solution of (±)-5-ethyl-3-hydroxy-7-(trifluoromethyl)isobenzofuran-1 (3H)-one (1.97 g, 8.0 mmol) in 20 mL of DMF was added potassium carbonate (4.42 g, 32.0 mmol) followed by iodoethane (1.92 mL, 24.0 mmol). The resulting mixture was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 1 h. The reaction was diluted with 1N HCl to pH ˜4 and extracted with EtOAc. The organics were washed with 1N HCl, sat'd aq NaHCO3 and brine, dried (MgSO4), and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (elution with 10% EtOAc/hexane) to afford 1.8 g (83%) of the title compound. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 10.05 (s, 1H), 7.92 (s, 1H), 7.73 (s, 1H), 4.47 (q, 2H), 2.80 (q, 2H), 1.38 (t, 3H), 1.29 (t, 3H).
