Potassium carbonate (0.85 g, 6.12 mmol) and benzyl bromide (0.53 ml, 4.49 mmol) were added to a solution of methyl 5-bromo-2-hydroxy-4-methylbenzoate (1 g, 4.08 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 ml). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 72 hours. Ethyl acetate (20 ml) and water (20 ml) were added and the organic layer separated, washed with water (3×10 ml), dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed in vacuo. Purification by column chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/hexanes) yielded the title compound as an oil. 1.35 g.
